Beyond the Headlines: India’s New Heroes Shine at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

India’s medal-winning run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continues to gather momentum, with a new group of athletes stepping into the spotlight and making the nation proud. While the outstanding performances of Jhandu Kumar, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Mirabai Chanu have already captured the country’s attention, several other Indian athletes have quietly scripted inspiring success stories of their own. Their achievements reflect the depth of India’s sporting talent and the bright future that lies ahead.

One of the most memorable moments came from Sharmila Dhankar, who created history by winning the gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put. Her victory was far more than another addition to India’s medal tally. It marked a significant milestone for Indian para-athletics and highlighted the growing strength of athletes who continue to overcome challenges with extraordinary determination. Every throw reflected years of dedication, discipline and resilience, making her triumph one of India’s defining moments at the Games.

Indian athletics also had reason to celebrate as Sarvesh Kushare soared to the silver medal in the men’s high jump. His podium finish was a welcome boost for Indian track and field and demonstrated the steady progress being made in athletics. Competing against some of the Commonwealth’s finest jumpers, Kushare displayed consistency, composure and confidence to earn a well-deserved place among the medal winners.

Weightlifting once again proved to be India’s strongest discipline. Raja Muthupandi added another silver medal in the men’s 65 kg category with a determined performance, continuing India’s rich tradition in the sport. His success was soon followed by Valluri Ajaya Babu, who claimed silver in the men’s 79 kg event, further strengthening India’s impressive weightlifting campaign.

The women’s weightlifting team also delivered excellent performances. Gyaneshwari Yadav lifted her way to a silver medal in the women’s 53 kg category, showcasing remarkable strength and composure under pressure. Bindyarani Devi battled hard to secure the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg event, proving once again why she remains one of India’s most dependable performers on the international stage.

India’s celebrations in para-athletics continued as Shilpa Shyla earned the bronze medal in the women’s F57 shot put. Sharing the podium with gold medallist Sharmila Dhankar made the achievement even more special, as two Indian athletes finished among the medal winners in the event. Their performances reflected the remarkable growth of para-sport in the country and served as an inspiration to countless aspiring athletes.

As the Commonwealth Games progress, India’s medal tally continues to rise through the efforts of both established champions and emerging stars. While experienced names have once again delivered on the biggest stage, Glasgow has also introduced the nation to a new generation of athletes eager to make their mark. Every medal represents years of sacrifice, perseverance and relentless hard work.

The Games are far from over, but one thing is already clear – India’s sporting future is in safe hands. From historic achievements in para-athletics to impressive performances in athletics and weightlifting, the tricolour continues to fly proudly in Glasgow. For millions of Indians watching from home, these athletes are not just medal winners; they are symbols of hope, determination and the limitless potential of Indian sport.
