India’s weightlifting contingent produced a spectacular display at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, giving the nation plenty to celebrate on Sunday. Mirabai Chanu created history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Chanambam Rishikanta Singh delivered a record-breaking performance to secure a hard-fought silver. Their remarkable achievements not only added to India’s medal tally but also showcased the country’s growing dominance in weightlifting on the Commonwealth stage.

Golden girl Mirabai Chanu once again lived up to expectations. Entering the competition as the overwhelming favourite, the Olympic medallist remained calm under pressure and produced another memorable performance. She finished with a winning total of 190 kg, lifting 85 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk. Along the way, she broke the Commonwealth and Games records in the snatch before setting another Games record in the clean and jerk. Her triumph also marked her fourth Commonwealth Games medal and opened India’s gold account at Glasgow 2026.

The competition, however, was not without its tense moments. Mirabai’s opening attempts in both the snatch and the clean and jerk were unsuccessful, but the experienced champion showed exactly why she is regarded as one of the finest weightlifters in the world. She quickly regrouped, returned with renewed focus and executed her remaining lifts brilliantly. Her determination, confidence and trademark smile lit up the arena as she climbed to the top of the podium for the third consecutive Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in the day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh announced his arrival among the elite with a sensational silver-medal-winning performance in the men’s 60 kg category. The Manipuri weightlifter lifted a total of 264 kg and impressed everyone by setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 121 kg in the snatch. He stayed firmly in contention for the gold medal throughout the competition and produced a superb clean and jerk performance to keep the pressure on his rivals.

Rishikanta made one final attempt at 151 kg in the clean and jerk to snatch the gold medal, but narrowly missed the lift. Although he had to settle for silver, his record-breaking effort and fearless performance reflected his immense talent and bright future.

The silver medal added another milestone to Rishikanta’s growing career. Having won gold at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and represented India at the World Championships, he continues to establish himself as one of the country’s most promising weightlifters. His performance in Glasgow has undoubtedly strengthened India’s prospects in international weightlifting.

With Mirabai Chanu’s historic golden hat-trick and Rishikanta Singh’s record-breaking silver, Indian weightlifting has once again demonstrated its strength on one of the biggest sporting stages. Their outstanding performances have given India a dream start in Glasgow and inspired millions back home. As the Commonwealth Games continue, Indian fans will be hoping this successful beginning marks the start of many more podium finishes and unforgettable moments.
