The countdown has begun! From 23 July to 2 August 2026, Glasgow, Scotland, will welcome athletes from across the Commonwealth for one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world. India is all set to make its mark with a 126-member athlete contingent, made up of 78 men and 48 women, competing across 13 sports disciplines, including para-sports.
Although the Indian contingent is smaller than the one that travelled to Birmingham in 2022, there is a good reason behind it. This edition of the Commonwealth Games follows a more compact, athlete-focused format with only 10 core sports, resulting in a leaner but highly competitive team.
Athletics will have the largest Indian representation, with 32 athletes aiming to bring home medals. Boxing and judo will each feature 14 athletes, while weightlifting will be represented by 12 lifters. India will also field a determined group of para-athletes, reflecting the country’s growing strength in para-sports on the international stage.
Several familiar faces will lead India’s medal hopes. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will once again be the centre of attention in the javelin throw, while Mirabai Chanu will look to add another memorable chapter to her remarkable weightlifting career. In boxing, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain will be one of India’s biggest hopes for success.
However, the Commonwealth Games are never just about the established stars. Every edition introduces new heroes – young athletes who seize the opportunity to surprise the world. For many members of the Indian squad, Glasgow will mark their first appearance at the Commonwealth Games. They will compete alongside experienced campaigners, learning from them while also striving to create their own success stories.
As the tricolour prepares to fly high in Glasgow, millions of Indians will be cheering every throw, lift, punch and sprint. Here’s wishing Team India the very best for a successful campaign. May they return home with plenty of medals and memories to cherish.
Author’s Note:
The Commonwealth Games are more than just a sporting event – they are a celebration of dedication, perseverance and national pride. Every athlete carries not only the weight of expectations but also the dreams of an entire nation. As Team India steps onto the world stage in Glasgow, let us celebrate their dedication, resilience and unwavering spirit. Win or lose, they have already made the country proud by earning the honour of representing India. Best wishes to every member of the contingent. 🇮🇳
