The Unwritten Manual of Parenthood

My grandmother possessed remarkable skills in raising children and caring for newborns—her wisdom became a cherished logbook for our family. Despite never attending school, she was a powerhouse of wisdom and led a simple life with my grandfather in a village. My grandfather, a dedicated school headmaster, believed in providing quality education to children, regardless of their background. He welcomed students from various walks of life into his modest home, ensuring they had a place to stay and study. With boundless love, my grandmother cooked for them and cared for them as her own.

My grandfather never demanded fees from their parents; he nurtured young minds with passion and unwavering dedication. The children he taught grew up to become doctors, engineers, administrators, teachers, and bankers, returning years later to honour and express their gratitude to my grandparents. Their selfless devotion shaped countless lives, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

They truly embodied the essence of parenting, beyond textbooks and theories, shaping lives through their lived experiences and unwavering love. Their approach wasn’t just caregiving; it was a holistic journey, covering every stage from motherhood to raising strong, principled individuals ready to take on the world.

Their wisdom continues to echo through generations, guiding parents in my family like an everlasting beacon. It’s rare to see such profound lessons stand the test of time, yet my grandparents built something truly enduring and eternal.

What rule books did they follow? Perhaps none! Yet they were extraordinary—not just as parents but as grandparents.

What guidelines does a bird follow? Who teaches it to build a nest and care for its young until they unfurl their wings and soar into the sky? Does a cat, a dog, a cow, or an elephant attend parenting classes? No. Parenting is an instinct—an innate wisdom embedded in all living beings capable of procreation and nurturing their offspring.

Nature itself is the ultimate teacher, offering priceless lessons. Parenthood is a journey of learning, shaped by experience and instinct. The apparent guidelines we follow merely echo what nature teaches in its unique way.

Every phase of a parenting journey is beautiful and unique, and no guidelines and books can ever enlighten a parent with essential lessons that prepare them for the roller coaster path called parenthood. Parenting is tough, but anything worthwhile is always difficult and cumbersome. One learns the vital nuggets of parenting in the journey itself through trials, errors, learning, and unlearning.

The birth of a child marks not just the beginning of a new life but also the profound transformation of parenthood—a journey woven with moments of joy, challenges, doubts, and unwavering love. There is no manual for parenting; instead, every experience unfolds as a lesson—sometimes learned flawlessly, sometimes shaped by mistakes. Yet, through it all, a parent’s instinct remains the guiding force, making the best possible choices in each moment.

Parenting is a delicate balance—holding on while letting go. As children grow, we witness their boundless potential, their struggles, and their triumphs. We must allow them to spread their wings, navigate their paths, stumble, and rise again. Every fall strengthens them; every lesson builds resilience.

Our role is not to dictate their journey but to stand behind them with unwavering support, offering guidance when sought and reassurance always. The greatest gift we can give is the certainty that, no matter where life takes them, we will always be there—a constant presence, a haven.
