Droupadi Murmu took oath as 15th President of India today (July 25th, 2022), at the Central Hall of Parliament in Delhi.
Having emerged as the ray of hope for the poor and the marginalized Indians, Smt. Droupadi Murmu was born in a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India.
Today, she stands as a motivation and inspiration to the 1.3 billion Indians with her early struggles, her rich service, and exemplary success to have found representation at this level.
The Gist of her Background – President of India 2022- Droupadi Murmu
Droupadi Murmu is the first Indian woman from the indigenous tribe of India to be elected for the ceremonial post and the second woman, after Pratibha Patil to serve as the President of India.
She hails from Odisha and before entering politics worked as a Junior Assistant (clerk) in the State Irrigation and Power Department of Odisha from 1979 to 1983. She later went on to become a teacher in Rairangpur until 1997.
In 1997, Droupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rairangpur and was elected as the councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. This was her first step in Indian Politics.
Later in the year 2000, she won the Odisha Legislative Assembly Election from the Rairangpur Assembly Constituency. Here she served two terms between 2000 and 2009. From March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, she was the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation, and from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004, she was the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development during the BJP and BJD coalition Government in Odisha.
She then happened to lose the Lok Sabha Election in 2009 from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha Constituency as the BJD and BJP alliance had ended.
She then went on to become the first woman to be sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to July 2021. In June 2022, the BJP nominated Murmu as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s candidate for the following month’s President of India 2022 election. And then went on to create history by being elected as the First Tribal Woman, the second woman, and the 15th President of India on 25th July 2022.

The 64-year-old, Droupadi Murmu registered a historic win over her rival Yashwant Sinha in the July 18 Presidential Election. She was administered the oath of office in the presence of outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President, and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, among others by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana.
Addressing the nation after the oath, Droupadi Murmu stated that she was the first President to be born in Independent India and that she was honored to take charge at a time India is completing 75 years of Independence. She also said, “My election is the greatness of India, mother of democracy.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Murmu’s swearing-in ceremony a “watershed moment for India, especially for the poor, marginalized and downtrodden,” and wished luck for her tenure. He added that in her address after taking the oath, President Droupadi Murmu gave a message of hope and compassion.
Murmu, in Parliament, said, “Reaching the Presidential post is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India. My election is evidence that the poor in India can not just dream but also fulfill those dreams.”
