Navratri as per the meaning of the word signifies the 9 days in which nine different goddesses are being worshipped.
From the old Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated in the month of Ashwin Sud.
The month of Ashwin Sood is being considered the days between September to October.
The nine goddesses who are associated with the worship of Navratri are:
1.Maa Shailputri. 4.Kushmanda
2.Brahmcharini. 5.Skandmata
3.Chandraghanta. 6.Katyayini
7.Kaalratri. 8.Mahagauri
9.Siddhidhatri
First day of Navratri: Goddess Maa Shailputri
She is also known as Hemavathi and Parvati. Just like her previous birth as Goddess Sati, goddess Shailputri also got married to Lord Shiva.
For praising and worshipping Goddess Shailputri a melodious enchanting Mantra has been considered:
ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥[1]
वंदे वाद्द्रिछतलाभाय चंद्रार्धकृतशेखराम |
वृषारूढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्री यशस्विनीम् ||
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ शैलपुत्री रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः||
