Saree is a timeless wardrobe essential which can now be worn in millions of different ways but the emotions it holds are always the same.
No matter how far we tread from Indian culture, or as many western trends may seep in, Saree will always hold a special place in Indian woman’s closet.
And when it’s about remembering Maa’s saree, memories begin to flow in like a wave crafting a undying feeling which makes me go awe and an instant craving to just see her one more time in that nicely tucked in saree unfurls.
There are thousand of stories hidden in her each crease and fold,
Connection between a saree and me began a long time ago.
I remember my childhood days, when I played ghar ghar,
I wished to be the wife, to grab the only chance to drape my maa’s saree to cover.
My first experience of wearing a saree was in my school farewell,
Elegance that Maa’s saree gave me, was beyond any branded modern wear.
I grew up watching my Maa wearing the six yard cloth in record breaking time,
Hoping someday I will match her speed and her charming smile.
Maa used her favourite saree to wipe my tears,
She cleaned my face and my sweat in fear.
Her saree helped me hide behind her when I felt shy,
She held my hand, I gripped her pallu even more tight.
When I wished to sleep, Digged my face into her laps,
Her lullabies were melodious and her pallu the warm blanket she wrapped.
Thirty years later, I own a number of sarees,
But still I yearn to encase myself in hers,to glance in the mirror to find my Maa and sense her cosy touch.
No attire can still replace my Maa’s saree,
A magic woven in this unstitched classic,
Is still so fresh, envelopes me in warmth,
This fondness will stay for now and perhaps for time infinite.
I rarely wear sarees now and whenever I drape it around, my daughter is the first one to compliment me and say ‘Mumma, when I will grow up, I want to be like you. You should wear this often Maa, you look beautiful‘.
I guess, saree is a sentiment that comes instantly to the one who wears and for those whom it’s a rare treat to see. Saree is for sure the best companion for special occasions, but when you wear it just like that you endure yourself a little more.
We all have similar memories when it comes to Maa ki Saree and we still experience the same affection the moment we embrace them.
