Ravana’s Riddle-Sage or Sinner?

Standing on the sky, I can lift up the Earth with two of my arms. I can completely gulp down any ocean; standing in war, I can even put the Death to Death.”

Ravana—a mythological figure looked at with awe and terror. Panicked were all ‘Asuras,’ gods, and human beings by his might and cruelty.

He had overenthusiasm and wanted all the best things always to be owned by him—be it the best wife, Gold Lanka Fort, or the best sword, ‘Chandrahas.’

No force in the universe can break my will; I bow only to my own principles”—was what he always boasted.

He wished to capture everything under himself and lived a lavish, luxurious life. A lifestyle full of pomp and show, arrogance, and awe was what he was obsessed with.

But if we move down, beneath and under the truth, deep down rather-we would learn that he was although obsessed with power but was very intelligent and full of knowledge.

Ten heads,’Dshanan’,as he is referred to-depict actually the fact that he had in his mind that much knowledge, which needs at least ten heads to be carried by.

Even Laxman went to him to gain knowledge when sent by Shri Rama himself.

He somewhere deep down knew that he was too arrogant to pray or praise the Lord. In the want of ‘Moksha,’ he rather planned to get killed by the hands of Lord Rama himself so as to achieve ‘Moksha’ and be one with the Lord himself.

He said, “Never think your enemy is small or powerless like I thought for ‘Hanuman’.”

He abducted Mata Sita just to incite Lord to approach and put his life to an end.

All so well planned, Death but with arrogance.

Today we all burn Ravana every year, but “Instead of burning paper Ravana, burn your inhuman effigies.” -That’s what should be done.

Don’t kill but conquer Ravana in you.”

Ravana was a villain with a good heart. “Not every hero has a good heart.”

It’s better to be a good Ravana than to be a bad Rama.”

He no doubt abducted Sitaji but never tried to rape or touch her. He gentlemanly waited for her consent.

I feel, “When we are burning down one Ravana, aren’t we being Ravana ourselves to nature?”

He was too well-versed in all enchants and ‘Mantras.’

Belonging to the clan of ‘Rishi Pulastya’ he did all his’ yajnas’ and ‘pujas’ himself.

Being a great sage, he won over Lord Shiva by continuously gifting his own heads to him. Miraculously the heads grew over and over again.

Such a pious sage he was he never kept Sita ji in his palace or own room but in ‘Ashok Vatika,’ where she was taken care of by lady demons with courtesy and care.

He himself says in Tulsidas’s written ‘Ram Charita Manas,’ “Lord, I knew I can’t do prayers, so I wanted myself to be killed by your hands so as to achieve ‘Moksha.’”

Basically it all began with the two ‘ganas,’ or yogis, laughing over Narad ji with monkey face. Over which Narad ji angrily cursed them to take rebirth thrice as demons.

Final birth taken by them as Ravana and Kumbhkarana.

Narad ji also  said they would be killed by Rama with the help of monkeys; then only will the curse be removed.

Monkeys—because they had made fun of him seeing him in monkey face.

Ravana though burnt every year as an evil sinner, has another aspect too.

He was very knowledgeable and foresighted.

“If I were Ravana, I would ask people not to burn me until and unless they have the qualities like that of Lord Rama.”
