Wild vs. Wired – Tigers

“Should tigers be left outside in a sanctuary or wired inside a zoo?

This is a big question raised.

India has 58 designated tiger reserves. These reserves are part of Project Tiger, a conservation initiative launched in 1973.

Each reserve typically includes a core area (often a national park or sanctuary.) With strict protection measures and a buffer zone with limited human activity.

Purpose

Tiger reserves are crucial for protecting tigers and their habitat, as well as supporting the well-being of local communities.

Establishment

They were established under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 with the National  Tiger Conservation Authority ( NTCA)

Overseeing their implementation.

 Structure

A tiger reserve typically has a core area (strict protection) and a buffer zone (limited human activity).

There are Tigers in the United States from Assam to the South. Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park. Ranthambore National Park, Periyar National Park in Kerala are some of the few famously visited places.

Goal

As per Section 38 of the Wildlife ( Protection) Act, 1972, the state governments are responsible for preserving the Tiger Conservation Plan which includes planning and management of national areas and maintaining the requisite competent staff to ensure the protection of the tiger reserves and providing inputs for maintaining viable population of tigers, co- predators and prey animals.

  • Tiger reserves were set up as a part of the Project Tiger, initiated in 1973, and are administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority of the Government of India. Tiger reserves consist of a core area, which includes part (s) of protected areas such as a national park or a wildlife sanctuary, and a buffer zone, which is a mix of forested and non-forested land. Project Tigers is aimed at performing the necessary activities to ensure the viability of the tiger population in the core area and to promote a balance between the existence of people and animals in the buffer zones..

Should tigers be in the wild or in captivity?

Everyone loves freedom, and why can’t the tigers be in their natural surroundings?

Is it to protect the Tigers and the other animals or our selfish motive?

To make a note of the population count, they are wired, and the cubs born are counted, and a record is maintained.

If only they could talk, they might request to leave them in their natural habitat.
