Honouring the Guiding Light: A Tribute on Guru Purnima

🙏

Guru Purnima, observed on the full moon day of Ashadha, is a sacred day to pay tribute to the Gurus—our mentors, teachers, and guides—who drive away the darkness of ignorance and light the way of wisdom. As the Sanskrit mantra reads, “Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara,”a Guru is perceived to be the very embodiment of creation, conservation, and transformation.

A Guru in our culture is not confined to a textbook or a classroom. A mother who teaches us morals, a friend who encourages us during times of adversity, even a time of failure that can teach us something about life—these are all Gurus in their own sense. The tale of Eklavya, who learned from his icon Dronacharya at a distance, reminds us that learning is a two-way-street that starts with reverential respect and dedication.

“Ready flash, the teacher will,” goes an old saying.

Being a teacher, I’ve had numerous fond memories, but one is stuck in my mind. It was the goodbye of my Class 12 batch, for which I had been the class teacher for two years. I was on the stage when I looked out and saw my students standing with tearful eyes, holding self-made notes and gifts. One of them stood up and said in a hushed tone, “Ma’am, you werenot just our teacher—you were our second mother.” I couldn’t suppress my tears. That day, I understood that being a teacher is not only about teaching—it’s about raising hearts, just like a parent does.

Swami Vivekananda declared, “The Guru is the bright mask which God wears in order to come to us.”

This Guru Purnima, let us pay respect to all guiding lights in our lives—visible and invisible.

A Heartfelt Tribute:

Not only in books, but in hearts you remain,
Guiding with love, illuminating our path.
A word, a smile, a silent gesture,
You mould our soul like God’s hands.
O beloved Guru, we bow and pray—
Thanks for illuminating the path for us
.
