Poetry And It’s Forms

Poetry is a form of writing where rhyming words have to be felt and placed. The music they create have to resonate our hearts, plus it should have a valuable message in it. Many people love rhyming words. Some like tongue twisters for fun. If you like poetry in any form, do go on and have a read….This article gives you various insights into the various forms of poetry. Poetry depends on an iambic pentameter and the syllables of words used in each sentence.

Various forms of Poetry 

1.Sonnet: 

Sonnet came from the Italian word “sonneto” which means song. It is a 14 lines poem which has a rhythm and rhyme .There are different types of Sonnets: Shakespearean, Petrarchan, Clare or Spenserian. Sonnet that delves into the concept of love as an enchanting melody, drawing inspiration from feelings of love and emotions.

Rhythm and Meter

Form: The Shakespearean sonnet (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG), 

            The Petrarchan sonnet (ABBA ABBA CDECDE), 

             The Clare sonnet (AA BB CC DD EE FF GG),

             The Spenserian sonnet (ABAB BCBC CDCD EE)

2.Sattacco:

Sattacco has an internal rhyme and repetition of words.Here is an example of a Sattacco that I have written:-

Home and Family 

A Home is place, friends and family

Where you can laze, work to do plenty

Love! Love! Warmth exist

Everything in abundance persists

No one in it likes to stay apart

love is in the family’s heart.

Members live, in happiness exclusively

Members give, joy whole heartedly.

A family! A family! Promotes oneness

Laughter, smiles and togetherness.

Home is a place of longevity

A family teaches everyone unity.

3.Ballad

A ballad is a form of narrative poetry that tells a story, often about love, adventure, or tragedy. It typically has a regular rhyme scheme and rhythm, making it easy to recite or sing. Traditionally, ballads were passed down orally through generations. They are composed of quatrains (four-line stanzas) or sometimes longer stanzas, often with a rhyme scheme like ABAB or ABCB. Refrains (repeated lines or phrases) are common at the end of each stanza, creating a musical or rhythmic quality. Ballads often focus on dramatic, emotional, or historical themes.

4.Ode

It is a poem which pays tribute to a celebration, an occasion, an event ,an important person or ceremony. It pays tribute to a particular person or celebration in a poetic form. Example of an ode that I have written 

An Ode to Autumn 

The passing of the summer 

The transition into winter 

That’s where autumn sets in

your heart it does win

The falling of the leaves

of different colours from trees

The day getting shorter 

The night getting longer 

5.Haiku

It is a Japanese form of poem with 3 lines .The first line  contains 5 syllables, the second line consists of 7 syllables, and the third line consists of 5 syllables. Here are some of the examples that I have written 

Dance  of existence

You and I will dance

we love each other and exist

Till the end of time 

Path of redemption

We will redeem love

Make path for our loved ones

Always fair and fine

6.Epic

Epic is a lengthy poem which tells about the story of the past and history in a poetic form. It comes from the Greek word “Epos”.

7.Cinquain 

A Cinquian is written in 5 lines of 22 syllables. Here is an example of what I have written :

Cinquain 2 4 6 8 2 syllables 

WRITING

Writing,

experience

and imagination

Gives you immense satisfaction,

Fully

8.Villanelle

It is a nineteen line poem consists of 5 tercets( 3 lines) and 1 quatrain.

9 Arcostic Poem 

In this poem each line of poem begins with the letters of the given subject word. For example I have written a arcostic Poem on the word Charity:-

Charity begins at home 

Happy to give away things that are worn

Also give food and clothing to the people who are lone

Rightfully doing duties even when alone

lliterate people need some lessons zone

Tasks of charity begins on a phone

Yesterday is gone, today is sown

There are other forms of poetry  like free verse, Limerick, elegy , duet or the Indian form of Ghazals. Go on and give your pen a chance to try the different forms of poetry.
