The Fireflies

The Fireflies

The bungalow lights were just on, the only lights that could give a passer-by guidance on the blind turns. The dark blank cover around the bungalow, a carpet with all that could be heard was silence. A wait every evening with the beautiful moonlight, just giving you company. A wait for someone to return and then the time just stopped for the two of them.

The honking of the car from a distance, a signal to be ready. She exactly knew the time when he would return  and so she would be just there with a lovely smile always. She gets into the car and there they go out  through the meandering roads of this dark dense forest. The music played, just the favourites of the two .

Love does not need words to be spoken, love can be expressed in any  way. The wait in itself, the effort to maintain the routine, the eagerness to be together is all there, because of love. It had just been a few months that they got married. These initial months are more of understanding and knowing each other. There is always this attachment and at times possessiveness with each other. These moments together are cherished forever, no matter what goes on later in life. These moments of togetherness are always a keep sake.

There was nothing special about the drive but what was special was making that conscious effort . They drove through the darkness and the car stopped suddenly. Nothing that went wrong and she knew it was to stop. This was the place where he would stop the car and they would just sit for a few minutes in silence. The head lights switched off and what was there to see was the most beautiful sight  which she always enjoyed. She looked up to the sky , the moon just shining there, peeping through the tall eucalyptus trees. Did it follow them always?

Seemed so , maybe loving to be part of this most beautiful moment they had occasionally. As she rolled down the windows of the car and stepped out, it was simply mesmerizing. A carpet of fireflies that looked so pretty, as if the stars just moved down , twinkling in the darkness of the place. She loved this sight and could sit there forever. They both just stood there holding hands, feeling the warmth of love in the beauty of the night.  They stood there for awhile and then got back in the car.

For a little distance the head lights were not switched on. Just passing by the twinkling carpet of fireflies on either side , was the most fabulous feeling ever.  That was just the routine they followed and then they would be back. Back in the room where the moon would be out peeping through the window, following love that grew between the two.

The darkness was never scary because it had given them the moments to just stay silent and feel the love that was most precious.

What was to be spoken about love ? It was just a simple gesture of being aware of the likes and dislikes of each other. What was expressed needed no words or elaborate arrangements or gifts. The only thing that mattered was to be there and live the moment.

Years have passed by but they never forget to sit in the darkness watching the littles fireflies glittering in the darkness of the night. It is not very often that this happens but the efforts to  take out time and create that moment of togetherness is what it is all about.

Love needs presence, love needs understanding and care and love needs the willingness to be together. What if it’s just a firefly that ignited the emotions between them, when all they do is stay quiet and sit in the darkness with the moon just telling them,’ I am jealous of this love , that I follow which makes me feel, have I been left alone , as I can watch two hearts surrounded by the stars that have fallen from the sky.’
