Global Warming

“Global warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening.”

-James Hansen

Global Warming

The climate change has become one of the most pressing environmental issue in the existing time. It holds an inseparable position as the climate change comes in the picture. It is a phenomenon which is characterized by continuous increase in earth’s temperature. It is driven primarily by human activities particularly the emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) These emissions originate from the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industrial processes and agricultural practices.

As time passes, the repercussions on weather patterns and the overall health of our earth increases with continuing rise in the earth’s temperature. 2023 was the hottest year recorded and reports have revealed that Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet. It shows global warming effects the polar regions and mountain glaciers more than any other region on the earth. Besides, with the increase in earth’s temperature precipitation also  rises which can result in flash floods, destructive hurricanes and snow storms. Recent reports have shown that coral reefs have become endangered by facing environmental stress in the form of global warming. Moreover, trees are getting extinguished and wildfires are becoming more common.

Global warming also holds socioeconomic consequences in the context of agriculture, health and economies. With varying precipitation patterns, global warming poses severe threat to agriculture in the form of crop failures and food shortages. Human health is also badly affected, vector borne diseases are becoming common. Billions are spent on disaster recovery and infrastructure repairs which forms the basis of its economic effect.

Global warming is an serious issue which needs to be addressed. To combat global warming it is important to make efforts to reduce green house gas emissions. This can be done by switching from non-renewable energy sources to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency and promoting practices which are sustainable in nature. Furthermore, transportation which is a major source of emission can be focused towards electric vehicles and efforts should be made to make a transition from private to public transport which can prevent unnecessary vehicles, thereby resulting in less emission.

To conclude,  global warming is a universal issue. It should be concerned by everyone. A little individual step can save lives of hundreds. Everyone should be made aware of its causes and consequences so that collectively we can face it and make our lives healthy, happier and more safer.

“Global warming is not a conqueror to kneel before – but a challenge to rise to. A challenge we must rise to.”
