Love is Forever

What is Love???
Love is Forever

A gentle gush of wind blows when we meet, I get butterflies in my stomach when our eyes meet, we forget every grief when we see each other. These have become a criteria to describe love in the modern times. That’s what Bollywood movies have taught us since our childhood and that is the reason why the culture of “love at first sight and divorce at first fight” as they say, is so prevalent nowadays. So, is love all about the butterflies in the stomach?

Love is a very beautiful feeling that has the ability to give immense happiness and contentment even in a given situation of terrible pain and difficulty. However, true love is so rare to find in today’s times.

“True love.” A very loaded word. It is so commonly used and thus also so commonly misused. Everyone in a relationship says or thinks that he/she is in true love. But true love is a lot deeper than what our eyes are capable of capturing. It requires a perfect balance between so many things. It requires the persons in the relationship to sometimes kill their own feelings, to sometimes get hurt, to sometimes do something that they absolutely hate, sometimes fight a war for love, sometimes endure unbearable pain but these things are what make true love so valuable and precious.

According to our ancient scriptures, there are four purusharthas in the world. They are- dharma, artha, kama and moksha. Let me explain what they are and how they are applicable in a relationship.

Dharma: Our relationship must have dharma at the top which means that we must discuss religious and spiritual concepts and focus of conducting pious activities together. Our relationship must have righteous principles and strong value systems.

Artha: This means both should engage in activities that help them earn money. You must have come across many people who say that in a relationship, money is nothing and love is all that matters. They are foolish to think that way because when we see practically, to fill our bellies, we need money. Therefore, we must also dedicate sometime to earn money.

Kama: This translates to lust and desires. Lust too has its own role to play in a relationship but of course, love should not turn into mere lust. The persons in a relationship must also engage in fulfilling their desires together.

Moksha: This translates to liberation. We all are ultimately entangled in this heinous cycle of birth and death. Nothing in this world is permanent and so are our worldly relationships. There is a very famous saying, “a family that prays together, stays together.” This simply means that we must together engage in spiritual activities and works towards attaining liberation from this cycle of birth and death. We must try elevate our relationship to be able to stay together even after death. Spiritual activities done by a soul never go waste. They pass on to the next life. So, even if you don’t get freed of this material bondage, you can at least be together in the next lives as well and together work to attaining the the ultimate goal of this human form of life.

Hence, true love is the one that all the above given aspects in the perfect balance. A relationship can be truly successful only if we keep artha and kama perfectly engaged between dharma and moksha. All these purusharthas have to be in perfect balance to be able to experience the transcendental bliss of true love.

Love comes with a lot a pain as well but it also brings with it immense strength to fight against all odds. So, mere love, which is so often misunderstood and misused is not permanent but true love which is perfectly balanced, is surely FOREVER.
