Dear readers… In this article, I have briefly mentioned some home remedies and the benefits provided, by my mother-in-law, gained through her lifelong experiences.

Most Indian homes with joint families still occupy three generations under one roof. It’s always an advantage to be a part of this system. Apart from sharing fun, food, and laughter, among young and old folks, everyone gets well-looked after daily to enrich their immunity.

During someone’s ill health, the very first thing that comes to mind is Granny’s bag of experiences, her advice for a particular problem, and her treatment based on the ingredients found in the kitchen or the home lawn. Her time-tested cures have aided one and all without any side effects.

In my household, the most common remedy for the common cough and cold ailment is ginger and honey. In a stone bowl, my mother-in-law grinds an inch of ginger to extract its juice. Then she mixes about half a spoonful of honey with ginger juice, which is about half a spoon.

Within three days of taking the ginger honey mix twice a day, the common cold effectively vanishes away. But in case the cold is prolonged, for say five days, only then can we seek a Doctor’s help. That usually happens when there’s some kind of infection in the body.

Another home remedy for menstrual pain is the use of holy basil or tulsi leaves. My daughter often faces such pain. My m-i-l or her Granny plucks two-three regular shaped tulsi leaves from our home lawn, for just one serving that’s to be taken on an empty stomach early in the morning.

She finely chops the leaves, mixes two pinches of jaggery powder in it, and blends them in a spoonful of water for some time, before grinding them together and giving it to her granddaughter. She advises only to consume this blend for three to four days before the start of the monthly periods, for pain relief later on.

Likewise, for many types of other regular ailments, the family members go through, my mother-in-law has solutions for all. Right from the digestion problem to cracked lips.
