India Create History at Squash World Cup 2025: A Maiden Title Sealed in Chennai

India created a golden chapter in its sporting history on 14 December 2025 as the national squash team clinched its first-ever Squash World Cup title, defeating top seeds Hong Kong China in a memorable final at the Express Avenue Mall in Chennai. With this triumph, India became the first Asian nation to lift the Squash World Cup trophy and only the fourth country in the world to achieve this feat after Australia, England and Egypt.

The victory was not only historic but also emphatic. Seeded second, the Indian team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, displaying consistency, composure, and depth at every stage of the competition.

India began its campaign with authority in the group stage, comfortably defeating Switzerland and Brazil by identical 4–0 margins. The confidence gained from those wins carried seamlessly into the knockout rounds. In the quarter-finals, India outclassed South Africa 3–0 before producing another commanding performance against two-time champions Egypt in the semi-finals to book a place in the final.

Facing Hong Kong China in the title clash, India rose to the occasion with remarkable poise. Veteran Joshna Chinappa, ranked 79th in the PSA rankings, provided the perfect start in the opening women’s singles match. Drawing on her vast experience, she stunned world No. 37 Lee Ka Yi with a composed 3–1 victory, setting the tone for the evening.

India’s momentum continued with Abhay Singh, the country’s highest-ranked men’s singles player at world No. 29. Calm and confident, Abhay dominated Alex Lau in straight games, sealing a 3–0 win in just 19 minutes and giving India a commanding 2–0 lead.

With history within reach, 17-year-old Anahat Singh stepped onto the court under immense pressure and delivered a performance that belied her age. Showing maturity, control, and fearless intent, she defeated world No. 31 Tomato Ho 3–0, sealing the championship for India and sparking celebrations among the home crowd. Her victory meant that India did not need to field men’s singles national champion Velavan Senthilkumar for the final rubber.

The title marked a significant leap forward for Indian squash, improving on the bronze medal finish at the 2023 edition. It also reinforced Chennai’s growing reputation as a major squash venue, with the city hosting the Squash World Cup for the third consecutive time.

Reflecting on the achievement, Abhay Singh described the win as an unforgettable moment and a privilege to share with such accomplished teammates. His words captured the collective emotion of a team that had worked relentlessly to reach the top.

With squash set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, India’s maiden Squash World Cup triumph carries even greater significance. It signals the country’s rising stature on the global stage and offers inspiration to a new generation of players who now have a powerful example of what belief, preparation and teamwork can achieve.

India’s victory in Chennai was more than just a title win. It was a statement of intent and a celebration of how far Indian squash has come.
