Beyond the Riots

The recent riot and protest that took place in Nepal has stirred the entire nation. Also referred to as the Gen Z protest, the entire outrage began against a corrupt government. The citizens of the country were forbidden from being entitled to basic rights, like those of having access to the internet, followed by other basic amenities. Nepal’s Gen Z protesters have brought down a government in under forty-eight hours. However, the victory has come at a heavy price. Seventy-two people were killed in last week’s protests. Even though the original cause of the protest might have been against a corrupt government, the casualties caused as part of the protest has been a heavy toll.

Last weeks protests were the deadliest unrest in the Himalayan region in so many decades. As per data, official buildings, residences of political leaders, and luxurious hotels were torched, vandalized, and looted. The wife of the former Prime Minister is now fighting for her life after their home was set ablaze. The large extent of casualty and harm that has been caused so far is beyond comprehension. The destruction is not only confined to the capital Kathmandu, as more than a hundred local offices have been harmed so far.

The government in any country, be it India or Nepal, is oftentimes corrupt – the main focus being solely on the profits being earned, and the citizens of the country being ignored, their welfare hitting the rocks without any effect. As of recent updates, with the use of gaming technology, a new government has been selected. The former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been elected as the new interim Prime Minister. Interim Prime Minister refers to someone who has been temporarily selected to serve the term as the Prime Minister, for a particular span of time in general.

Mrs. Karki has been backed by the Protestors for support. The anxiety about Nepal’s future still remains persistent. Footage of the protesters cleaning the country up after the protest went viral on social media handles, for example, Instagram. The families of the protestors who were killed are still coming to terms with their personal loss. The current interim PM was selected by the new generation protestors on Discord. Discord is an online platform where people can connect with each other, and share media and send messages. This is indeed something new and groundbreaking.

The country will hold elections on March 5 , 2026 to elect the next government and Prime Minister. The corruption had been going on in Nepal for a long time. This outrage against the evident corruption was actually quite necessary. The privileged lifestyle only a select few could lead was infact something which depicted the reality of the government – the rich get richer, while others are devoid of rights . Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and each opinion will obviously vary from the other. The protest proved that even though Gen Z may be considered to be lazy, if they want to fight for a motive , they will in fact end up doing so .

The aftermath, for sure, did result in a lot of doom and destruction. People were killed, and buildings were razed to the ground. But sometimes destruction is necessary . Here’s to hoping that the future of the nation may actually get way better , henceforth proving that change comes with a revolution . The recent update about the maiden goddess in Nepal shedding tears , which might prove to be a warning sign of an upcoming catastrophe , has been in the limelight for some time.
