What we have witnessed over the past few weeks in Nepal is not a representation of the peace and prosperity we need within the Asia-Pacific region. There’s been a ring of thorns around India, especially with political stability within the neighbourhood.
Nepal – a nation that takes pride in its Hindu roots and traditions, was burning in the early part of September 2025, with the ruling class being ousted by the general public.
Rampant corruption, employment challenges, social media shutdown and a young population seeking change in their standards of living took to the streets in a solidarity protest, which went awry. What happened later, left the world wide-eyed.
Protests took a turn in the direction of destruction, fist-fights and fury. Young Nepalese men and women left their capital in shambles as they sought openness in democratic functioning, but were given a raw deal. Such was the anger that houses were torched, the parliament was in plumes of smoke and the families of the ruling class were made victims of arson, rude and life-threatening acts. Many of them had to be airlifted to safety in other countries.
What led to this protest taking an odd turn? People were seeking change, and despite the Nepalese Democratic Movement in 2008, many felt they had seen no visible change from the constitutional monarchy which they had voted out.
Young and enterprising Nepalese men and women were migrating out of the country, and the nation itself wasn’t performing well from an economic standpoint. Furthermore, a forced social media ban was a strain on freedom of speech and hence the protest began.
While the world watched the tiny country of Nepal, known for its beautiful terrain, holy temples, and historical artefacts burn over days, their collaborative movement, though not considered peaceful, has finally given hope for millions. An interim head of state has been assigned, as the military forces do their best to retain peace in the Himalayan valley. The next few weeks or months will be a litmus test for Nepal, as it caters to the needs of a growing population with economic policies, which will drive innovation, boost growth and assist the country in becoming another shining pearl within the Asian subcontinent.
May there be peace, prosperity, and happiness among the Nepalese people, and normalcy be retained. This will help in keeping the neighbourhood safe for everyone.
Pray for Nepal, Pray for Peace and Strengthened Brotherhood in the Eastern Hemisphere! #PeaceForAll
