India Shines at Chemistry Olympiad 2025 with 2 Golds and 2 Silvers

India has once again showcased its academic prowess on the global stage with a stellar performance at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2025 held in Dubai from 5 to 14 July. The Indian contingent, comprising four brilliant students, clinched two gold and two silver medals, securing sixth place in the overall medal tally among 90 participating countries.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to India’s strong foundation in science education and the dedication of its young minds, mentors, and scientific observers.

The four Indian students who brought glory to the nation are:

Gold Medallists:

Devesh Pankaj Bhaiya from Jalgaon

Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad

Silver Medallists:

Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar

Ujjwal Kesari from New Delhi

Their consistent hard work, sharp intellect, and rigorous preparation helped them stand out among the 354 students representing 90 countries at this prestigious international competition.

The success of these young achievers was bolstered by the relentless efforts of a dedicated mentorship team:

  • Professor Ankush Gupta, Head Mentor, from the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai
  • Professor Seema Gupta, Mentor, from Acharya Narendra Dev College, Delhi
  • Dr Neeraja Dashaputre, Scientific Observer, from IISER Pune
  • Dr Amrit Mitra, Scientific Observer, from Government General Degree College, Singur, West Bengal

These experienced educators not only guided the students academically but also instilled confidence and nurtured their competitive spirit.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), under the aegis of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), serves as the nodal centre for Olympiad training and selection in India. With a legacy of excellence, HBCSE organises intensive orientation and training camps to groom students for international science Olympiads.

Subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, and Astrophysics are taught with depth and rigour to identify and train the country’s finest talents. These camps are designed not just to boost academic knowledge, but also to cultivate analytical thinking, laboratory skills, and scientific curiosity.

India’s performance at the International Chemistry Olympiad has been consistently commendable over the years. According to statistics shared by the Press Information Bureau:

Indian students have collectively won:

30 per cent gold medals

53 per cent silver medals

17 per cent bronze medals

In the last decade alone, the number of gold and silver medals has increased by 38 per cent and 58 per cent respectively.

The year 2025 marked India’s 26th consecutive participation at the IChO, reinforcing its strong commitment to fostering global academic excellence.

Participation in global Olympiads such as the IChO offers more than just medals. It provides students with an opportunity to interact with like-minded peers from around the world, understand diverse scientific perspectives, and explore future collaborations. Events like these shape the scientists, innovators, and educators of tomorrow.

As the tricolour soared high in Dubai, it became a symbol of India’s commitment to scientific education, youth empowerment, and global collaboration. The success of these four young champions – Devesh, Sandeep, Debadatta, and Ujjwal – has inspired countless students back home and reaffirmed the nation’s place in the global scientific community.

Let us celebrate this win not just as a medal tally, but as a powerful step forward in the journey of Indian science.

Congratulations, Team India. May your achievements continue to inspire generations of learners and dreamers.
