Our environment is facing numerous issues. We see them every day, yet we fail to acknowledge them seriously. We know that there is a severe water shortage, but what steps are we taking to conserve water? Unfortunately, the answer is almost nothing. In fact, many of us are still wasting water carelessly, despite being fully aware of the crisis. We are aware of the issues, yet we don’t take the necessary actions to bring about a change.
We have the knowledge, and we have the ability to create a greater impact. Still, we often choose to do nothing. Global warming has been a growing concern for decades, and we are well aware of its presence. But again, what are we doing to combat it? For example, during festivals like Diwali, we could focus on celebrating by spending time with our families, sharing sweets, and playing with children. However, instead of adopting eco-friendly celebrations, many people choose to burst crackers.
Bursting crackers is not just harmful to the atmosphere, as it contributes significantly to global warming, but it also causes severe noise pollution. Elderly people and animals suffer the most from these loud and sudden sounds. In fact, my own grandmother got frightened by the noise of firecrackers. Loud noises at unexpected times can even lead to heart attacks in elderly individuals.
Another major issue is deforestation. People are cutting down trees to build houses. Of course, having a house is essential. Everyone deserves a home to live in. But building extra houses that remain idle or unused is excessive and unnecessary. When trees are cut down, it’s not just about the loss of greenery, it’s about losing the very source that supports life on Earth.
Environmental threats are everywhere. Even aquatic species are unable to survive peacefully. The waste we dump into rivers, lakes, and oceans leads to the death of countless marine animals. They are not even able to breathe properly because of the toxic pollutants we release into the water. Clean water is becoming increasingly scarce. In many places, people are forced to consume contaminated water, which leads to health issues such as throat infections and stomach problems. This is a direct result of our own negligence. Had we preserved our fresh water sources, we could still be enjoying the benefits of clean and safe drinking water.
In some places, industries carelessly release waste into nearby water bodies, polluting both the water and the surrounding environment. This toxic practice not only harms aquatic life but also affects the health of people living in nearby areas.
Another sad truth is how dependent we have become on vehicles, even for the shortest distances. We prefer using bikes and cars instead of walking a few steps. This habit adds to air and noise pollution, making our surroundings more unhealthy each day. Our laziness has disguised itself as convenience, but in reality, it is harming the environment and our own well-being.
Everyone, from children to elders, knows that plastic is harmful to nature. We’ve heard it repeatedly, plastic is a poison to the planet. Yet, we continue to use plastic bags when we can easily switch to cloth or paper alternatives. Whether it’s laziness or carelessness, the result is the same, our environment suffers because of our irresponsible choices.
Yes, some harmful events in nature are beyond our control. But many are a direct result of human actions. If we continue to treat this situation as a joke, we will become the joke ourselves. Why wait for a disaster to wake us up? Why not act now and make the necessary changes while we still have time?
Even the act of hunting animals is a danger to our ecosystem. If we don’t stop, one day we might find ourselves being hunted by nature in return,as we are already starting to experience in the form of natural disasters. It’s time we took care of the environment so the environment can take care of us.
