Envy

In a farway kingdom of verdeland used to live Princess Vidia. She was an exquisite beauty. The tales of beauty reached far away. But the queen was worried sick. Once the king asked her the reason. Queen sighed and said, ” Vidia’s beauty remains in face , but her heart is devoid of any . She is getting obsessed being the most beautiful. I fear this will do more harm than good”. Though the king understood yet remained passive due to his filial pity.

Queen’s worry implemented in Vidia’s over envious nature. She could tolerate almost no other beautiful object around her . She tore away the most beautiful rose from her garden, destroyed the most magnificent fountain of her palace as if to declare that she was the only paragon of beauty. Her sister princess Lydia had a beautiful nightingale as friend who everyday used to sing for the younger princess. Vidia went jealous and demanded the bird’s favour.

But alas! The bird was dead quite in her presence.

“Sing for me. I have heard your song before but be it upon my order this time. It’s must be an ode to my divine beauty”.

The bird firmly answered,”  sorry, but I sing of only the most beautiful things around me. Like nature , love and goodness. Since you are devoid of this virus I can’t sing for you.”

Being livid with rage Vidia ordered to get the bird killed. And upon her family’s shock and refusal stared hunger strike. The king ,helpless, conformed.

But this boosted Vidia’s evilness tenfold. Her inner cruelty started to reflect upon her face and beauty started to wane out. Her graceful body turned bony. Her azure eyes were hollow and pale. Her once charming face inspired dread and disgust now.

Vidia was habituated with adoration not with disgust. She tired all artificial means to regain her former pultritude but all in vain.

Once Lydia came to her sister

“Why is your room always dark and curtains drawn?” She asked.

“Mirrors are afraid of my face”, Vidia sombrely replied.

“But beauty is not just about face, it comes from  within. But your within is stagnant with self consuming toxin that affects your outer look”.

Vidia was taken aback. Lydia continued, “come out and appreciate the real essence of beauty in nature which is graced by love, not tarnished by envy.” The duo came to royal garden. The flowers she destroyed were resurfaced . The western sky was rosy hued. Vidia felt happy not envious for the first time in her life . And when she sat at the step of the royal pond to behold moonlight whispering with water lilies she started to cry.

Lydia told her softly,” the moon is left with marks yet she is not envious. She is understood the real beauty comes from love which she shares with the world”.  Vidia realised in her core the truth.

Since then verdeland saw the most beautiful princess , radiant both from in and out.
