The Status of Women

Status is termed as social position. Women and her status depends upon factors interrelated aspects like socio economic background and politics. All need separate discussion.

Economical :

Despite worshiping goddess Lakshmi as deity of plenty , women are believed not to have right over economy. They are still underpaid from menial to white collar jobs, despite equal contribution as their male counterparts. Though they are finance ministers at their homes and nationally as well yet they are believed not to know the money craft . they are barred from earning. Many so-called well to do families keep women as financial vessels.

Social :

Society is feared a fierce and free minded woman. It is so snug with womanly passivity that a mettlesome woman baffles it. Mettlesome woman is synonymous to nettlesome to society. Thus patriarchal society loves garroting women with their pseudo morality , obligation and dignity . Her voice, choice, dream are ignored as she is sacrificed in the Altar of patriarchy. But what about society fostering the predators and still dare to preach of dignity to her. Her clothes ensues rape, her job ensues family rift ! Outrageous ! society loves seeing women as dolled up creatures whose physical beauty is society fiefdoms.

Political: despite many welfare scheme for women, women remain underrepresented in politics. This phenomenon is globally common. In our country alone female illiteracy, foeticide, domestic violence and  go unaddressed. Evil like dowry is still prevalent. The rampant sexual crimes are fostering undeterred. Thus It’s not just about giving political rights, it’s also about enabling women to exercise those rights with more earning prospect, self – defence schemes. Society must ensure that respect first.

Another issue I want to mention. Women’s journey always remains thorny. But quite eased with her fellow’s help. Thus women with patriarchal mindset are  major blocks to women emancipation.

They feed very wrong idea about ‘womanhood’ and teach her community to be perpetually weak this spiritual damage leaves a deep scar.

From ‘the suffrage movement’ of late 19th century to ‘the Me Too movement’ of recent years prove how our tales of trauma, struggle remain same. How when one women fights for herself, she stands for her entire clan.

Conclusion:

It’s a battle for dignity,  to end the gender apartheid. Only then every women can write Herstory – history from her perspective. we will reclaim that lost glory we enjoyed in ancient times – revered as the living manifestation of the divinity. Its high time to reclaim the social status with articulate thought, mettle , passion and fiery choices to rise like the phoenix as we are.
