Gender Equality

Gender is one of the very basic facets of humanity. Whenever an individual is born, two things come into consideration. The gender of the individual is something that is the social aspect of the identity. On the contrary, sex is rather biological in nature and depends on the genitalia of the child.

The term “equality ” refers to a phenomenon in which equal rights are ensured for every individual – be it a man, woman, or a transgender. The actual struggle for gender equality began with the suffragette movement in the nineteenth century. Women went out on the streets to reclaim their rights of voting and having basic human rights.

Rosa Park’s revolutionary fight against the reservation of seats in buses is still a very memorable event. Across the centuries, scenarios may have changed to a great extent. Yet, looking at the current scenario in Kolkata, gender equality is really a concerning issue. The assault and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata has stirred revolution in the city . People from all the stratas are protesting. The rage is clearly evident.  The heinous act is truly gut wrenching. The delay of the justice system is horrid. It is abhorrence. Thus, it is something of great concern. It  is blood boiling to witness the negligence on the part of the government.

The talk of presidential rule being imposed in Bengal is coming up as well. A petition is being signed online , whereby signatures are being collected to furthermore justify the cause. However, it somehow doesn’t seem to be a great imperative. The hidden yet revealed tie up between the state government and the central government as well.

Recently, another case has been exposed on social media . A young school student was falsely accused of rape by his teacher, which consequently led to his death by suicide. The issue of rape and murder is gradually converting into a gender war once again. The posts circulating ” Not all men, but always a man” are causing a great upstir as a result. It really needs to be brought to concern that rape , or any kind of physical or mental assault , doesn’t necessarily deal with gender issues. Even men and young boys get assaulted as well , although no one really knows about them because of gender stereotypes solely.

The entire idea of gender equality is solely about providing equal rights to every individual , be it a man , a woman or a transgender person as well. The reason behind the initialization of the Suffragate Movement in Europe was the fight for equal voting rights. Women were even denied seats allotted in buses as well . Rosa Park was the first woman to talk about such issues.

Secondly, another instance in Italy, is quite prevalent. Women who were raped by their fiancés would be forced to marry the perpetrator only. The chronotope of this incident was roughly around the nineteenth century.  The legal system indeed was very wrongful. However, Franca Viola , a young eighteen year old girl denied to marry her perpetrator. Due to the steps she took, there was a significant alteration in the legal system. People are human beings first of all, secondly their biological sex or gender takes the centre stage. A sociological aspect is something which doesn’t really count as part and parcel of the basic types. The incident which took place recently was an example of correctorial rape. It refers to a particular type of rape which is intended to correct per say , the attitude of a woman.

Gender equality can only be achieved when humanity literally takes the centre stage , and everybody gets equality.
