The rainy season is here and I go back to my flash back years of my school days.
In Bombay those years, the Rain God waits for the 1st day of school after the summer holidays. We were all ready to go fully prepared with our raincoats. The umbrella was of no use as it poured heavily.
We walked in a group to board a train from Bandra to Kingscircle Station to reach our school. Many times, due to waterlogging , they declared a holiday and oh no, none of us wanted to go back home to sit and study. There were no other entertainment nor we could play outside.
It was fun playing in the puddle and splashing water over our friends.
After my marriage, I was in Patna.
The rainy season was a pain as when it rained for an hour, our road in front of our building got flooded and it was difficult to go out. The children had a tough time going to the school.
In 1975, my husband was on his tour in Chapra North Bihar and I was with our 18 months old son and in _ laws.
It was a blessing in disguise as they stayed with us and it was a great moral help. Suddenly the PunPun River water flashed through the town and our building water level was raising high till 6 feet. Thankfully we were on the 1st floor but the ground floor people had a tough time. Many could not move their things. Some moved to our house and to the neighbours place.
We did not have a telephone connection. My husband was worried about us and was hearing the Radio Announcement, ” Patna is flooded and no connectivity.”
With great difficulty , he could manage to get some transportation and reached home wading through chest high water with a help of a stick someone gave him.He was afraid of water.
It was a horrific time but we were all happy to be together and milk and food packets were thrown. We used to run to the terrace to collect them.
My father_ in _ law at times waded through the water and got some vegetables.
I can never forget that day. Once a boat was in service and many got into that to take a ride and get some essential things.I wanted to enjoy a boat ride and somehow managed getting into that. Omg! What an experience and I cursed myself for such fun. I was praying to the Lord till I got home. When someone climbed into the boat, it tillted to one side and the people screamed. I narrate that incident to my grandkids now.
The Ganga used to flow above the danger level and we stayed opposite to the river. The fear of the water entering our building every rainy season was terrific. We were in the ground floor this time. Many times the water entered our complex and
We were strandard. The children were small and enjoyed making boats.
We used to go to the terrace and watched the Ganges flowing vigorously. Poor people who stayed near the shore were affected.
Each year the danger of flood like situation arised and people stocked their home with essential food items for a week.
Tough days due to the rain Havoc.
We still hear from friends that area gets flooded now too.
Now when I read the news of flood and watch the devastation it spreads all over, I remember our days.
In Assam each year the heavy rain and the havoc it creates is a regular happening.
The low level area in many cities get flooded and the water enters many houses.
People staying near Rivers are evacuated each year and the fishermen and their families face a lot of hardships.
Rain is a must. This year the regular rain has not started in Kerala and Mumbai.
One has to face the advantage and the disadvantages of the rain fury.
