Life Lessons from a Caterpillar

Nestled in a cocoon, a caterpillar ponders on aspects of freedom, the one he chooses as an answer to those million questions the world imposes on him. He withdraws into a nest and reflects on his life; silken threads bind him within a safe space, and he calls it his home.

Caged within the four walls of his flimsy house, a caterpillar focuses on the goal he aims to achieve. Every thought, advice, or suggestion from others is a distraction, deviating from the objective he has set for himself.

The rays of the morning sun brighten the dark corridors, and the dew drops glisten on the green leaves underneath which he has made his cocoon.

He hears the chirps of sparrows wallowing in the sun’s glory. The fragrance of blooming flowers spreads through the air; the scent reaches him. The raging sun rays in summer, the thunder, the downpour of rain, the cold waves in winter, and the freshness of spring caress his tender home; he sits cuddled inside and nurtures his dream.

The caterpillar is aware of the cycles of change, the flaws and glories entwined together, packed in a nutshell. The gamut of goodness and evil intersect one another, and one cannot choose a part, leaving the other. It has to be a whole.

He nurtures the ebbs, marks the crest, sets a target, strives, achieves, rejoices over the wins, and evolves. After some months of hardship, the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly. The colorful wings flutter in the free air, and he flies in the vast open sky.

Aren’t we humans like those caterpillars? We wriggle on the muddy earth, feast on tender leaves, and sleep in the warmth of our cocoons. Until jolted by a peal of thunder, the sound echoing in the ears. We catch our breath and run at an electric speed to fulfill our mission, or life will slip away from our grip, making us fall into the abyss of regret.

We measure our abilities, hone our latent skills, and march ahead with determination to ace the challenges and reach the pinnacle of success.

The past lies beneath us, and the future is ahead of us; we craft the moments of the present and bask in joy, unbothered about the results reaped later. What we deserve shall surely reach us in some way someday; the key is to wait for the raw fruit to change its color and texture.

Unearthing the nuggets that hold wisdom, we walk toward another milestone with decisiveness; our limbs change into delicate, vibrantly-hued wings. We look up to the stretched expanse of azure sky and fly like a butterfly. The fresh gust of air propels us further, the sweet smell of blooming flowers stroking our beautiful wings, and the warm sun rays lightening the darker patches. Every element charts a way for us to flourish and grow!
