The Do’s and Don’ts of Writing: A Guide for Writers of All Levels

The Do's and Don'ts of Writing: A Guide for Writers of All Levels

Whether you are a beginner or experienced in your writing field, it doesn’t matter. If you want to make your writing smoother, I can bet this blog will surely help you achieve your goals. Reading this blog is like adding a pinch of salt to your food—it makes it even tastier. Similarly, these do’s and don’ts will help you write in a better way!

The journey of writing is not as easy as people think. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Always keep in mind that writing is more than just putting words on paper. It goes far beyond that. So, it’s important to take your passion seriously.

Do’s While Writing:

• Imagination

Imagine that you are on a flight, enjoying a trip from India to Australia, even if you haven’t flown before. What’s wrong with imagining? After all, imagination plays an important role in a writer’s life.

• Writing

There’s a huge difference between thinking about writing and actually writing. In the end, what you put on paper matters. While writing, focus all your senses. Writing is a mental exercise.

• Build Connections

It’s essential to make connections in the publishing industry if you are a writer. Attend literary festivals, writing events, workshops, and conferences. Take writing classes or courses if you are a beginner and want to improve your writing skills. Join different writing groups and go to book launches of your favorite authors to learn from their personal experiences in writing. Use social media wisely to connect with fellow readers, and always stay informed about the publishing industry.

• Audience

Treat your audience as your supporters, but remember, you’re still human, not a deity. Listen to them carefully and seek constructive feedback from peers. Understand that you can’t please everyone all the time.

• Follow Your Bliss

Writing is a beautiful art. Don’t see it as a burden, or you won’t enjoy your passion. Following your bliss is like worship—it requires faith and courage.

• Listen to Your Heart and Mind

There’s often a conflict between the heart and mind. Whom should we listen to? Even if you’re unsure, think about what you’re going to write—poetry, fiction, or non-fiction. For fiction, listen to your heart more than your mind, and vice versa for non-fiction. If you’re writing poetry, listen to both.

• Develop a Habit

Writing is an art, and like any art, it needs to grow. Without a habit of writing regularly, your art will stagnate. It needs to evolve over time.

• Time Management

Effective time management is crucial for writers. Time and setting goals go hand in hand. Setting a timer for one hour can help you achieve your writing goals. Don’t let setbacks interfere with your writing schedule.

• Research

Excel in the topic you are writing about. Be knowledgeable about the chosen topic and stick to it. For example, if you are writing a food blog with recipes but lack cooking skills, avoid mentioning recipes.

• Motivation

Your biggest motivation in life is yourself. No one else has the power to make or break you unless you allow them to.

• Discipline

Discipline is crucial in your writing career. It requires patience, time, hard work, sincerity, and commitment. Consistency is the key to success.

Don’ts While Writing:

• Plagiarism

Remember, there is a difference between taking inspiration and copying others’ work. Don’t get stuck between the two. As an artist, your authenticity matters a lot. Art is like wealth, which can be gained and lost.

• Waste Time

Don’t waste your time just thinking about the whole story. Sometimes, ideas come only as you write.

• Neglect Reading

Remember, if you are a writer, you must also be a reader. Try to read as much as possible according to your schedule. Make books your best friends. In fact, read twice as much as you write to expand your vocabulary. Don’t ignore new words; use an online thesaurus or a dictionary to learn them quickly.

• Little Breaks

Never neglect small breaks. Eat healthily and get proper sleep of eight hours. Write with your full potential energy and take breaks in between to recharge.

• Fear Rejections

Rejections come to those who try. So, stop fearing rejections and view them as opportunities to learn and improve.

• Follow Blindly

Don’t follow blindly what is written. Try to understand the reason behind everything.

Overconfidence

Having faith in yourself is key to success. But never let success and achievements make you overconfident.

• Neglect Editing

If you think writing five pages of a story will make you the next bestseller, you’re on the wrong track. For a writer, writing is not enough. Revise and edit your writing as many times as necessary until you are satisfied with its quality.

• Overlook Submission

Suppose you write every single day but haven’t submitted your write-ups to any publication. That’s wrong. Start submitting your pieces to different magazines, journals, and anthologies.

• Forget to Experiment

Don’t confine yourself to a single style of writing. Experiment with different forms. For example, if you are a poet, don’t stick only to poetry. Try writing short stories, plays, essays, etc.

• Chill and Relax

Don’t overthink. Calm your mind for a moment. Sit on your couch and watch Netflix. Just chill and relax. Remember, even the sun needs rest, so why not you?
