Reva couldn’t believe her luck. At the kitty party, her Chinese food won so many accolades. Although she enjoyed cooking, the way her culinary skills shaped with every passing day was commendable.
Soon with the help of her teenage daughter, Reva took to social media to promote her cooking videos. However, her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband never supported her in any of her aspirations. For them, women were supposed to take care of the home and kids, that’s it.
“Cooking is something all women ought to do”, her mother-in-law would taunt her. But nothing stopped Reva. She collected orders for small parties and a few tiffin services. She never used online payment facilities. But with the help of her clients, she discovered the joy of opening her bank account and learned to use online tools effectively.
She mastered the art of learning a scooter. All this wasn’t easy. She would wake up before the world and venture out to drive. It took almost three years for Reva to go beyond her comfort zone and find her true calling.
Her inlaws called Reva’s parents and decided to put a brake on her flying. “Financially independent girls don’t have a place in our house, because they don’t make good homemakers,” Reva’s in-laws affirmed.
A timid Reva spoke up for the first time. “I am a housewife, but I chose to work for my dream. I wish to learn skills to enhance my self-worth.” Saying this Reva called Rani, her house help. “She is my partner in my cooking venture, my support, and my inspiration. I do not need a husband or approval from my inlaws to work on my dream.”
Reva and Rani walked together out of the home. Reva’s parents and inlaws did not support her. Rani’s face was burnt, she had been an acid attack victim. But nothing stopped these women today.
Today Reva works as a chef, with Rani. Reva looks after her family, home, and daughter. She always had strength within her, it was just lost under the cape of so-called stereotypes and attitudes. Reva isn’t a superwoman, but just like us, she failed but rose like a Phoenix.
