Krishna Kali – A Love Story

Krishna Kali
Krishna Kali

Teraa meraa pyaar amar
Phir kyun mujhko lagtaa hai darr…………..

Krishna was humming these soulful notes as Amar entered her room.

“Krishna, you’ve forgotten your medicine”.

“Get out, she shrieked……..”

“I’ll leave, but please take your medicine first “.

“Again you’ve brought this poison for me. You won’t leave me alone until…..”, she said hurling a tumbler at him.

Amar hurriedly left and called her doctor.

“Krishna forgot to take her medicines and is getting violent again”.
Dr.Rishab arrived and forcefully injected the medicines. He advised Amar to reconsider his decision.

“Amar, you stay alone, and looking at your age it’s very difficult to take care of such patients. You better send her to an old-age home. There’d be staff to take care”, he explained.

“Thanks for your advice, but Ruchi visits frequently and from now onwards I’ll also be more careful in the future”, replied he.

Ye mera diwaanaa pan hae
Ya mohabat kaa suroor
Tu naa pehchaane to hae ye
Teri nazaron kaa kusoor…………

Amar was singing when Krishna woke up.
“Amar, let’s go out somewhere, I’m feeling enervated today”.
Krishna had completely forgotten the incident.

Thirty-five years back…………..

Amar had seen Krishna, the heartthrob of her college, during an intercollege meet.

Mae khwaabon ki shehzaadi
Mae hoon har dil pe chaai……..
……………Bijli giraane mae hoon aai.

Dancing to recordings of her own songs, Krishna was flawless.
Amar was left mesmerized and fell for her at first sight.

She finished her degree, got a good job and later got married to her love.

They’d been together for years. He was such a promising match and was the one who had convinced everyone of their marriage.

Ab to hai tumse, har khushi apni
Tumpe marnaa hai, zindagi apni……….

She had dreamt of a happy life but to her utter dismay, she wasn’t even warmly welcomed by his family.
His house was messy contrary to her well-maintained home.
Ignoring everything she tried impressing everybody.
She resumed her office but was pressurized to resign, hence couldn’t continue.
She soon realized, there wasn’t any space for her interests in his life and busied herself with other activities.

She couldn’t digest him as the same man who had fallen for her after seeing her perform on stage.

Time elapsed.

She birthed children and turned them into mechanized robot during their upbringing.

Dil ke armaa aansuon me beh gae….
She would sing to herself.

Tired and lonely, she started forgetting things and suffered anxiety attacks. Headaches and migraines became a daily affair.

With no friends to vent out her emotions, loneliness became her companion.

Na koi umang hai, na koi tarang hai
Meri zindagi hai kyaa
Ik kati patang hai…………..
became zestful Krishna’s favourite song.

With her children, grew her forgetfulness.

She would occasionally, forget her name or way back from the market.
An address slip was kept in her purse in case of emergency……………

Three months back……….

They’d gone shopping for her daughter’s wedding.

To attend a call, her husband went out of the mall.

On returning, he couldn’t locate her.
She was gone, never to be found.

Perhaps, he didn’t try.

Aimlessly wandering on the streets, shocked and upset Krishna couldn’t recollect anything.

Mujhe teri mohabat kaa saharaa mil gayaa hota
Agar toofaan nahi aata kinaaraa mil gayaa hota………

“Krishnaaaaa…………”
Someone called her.

“Do you know me”, she turned to ask before collapsing.

She regained her senses in the hospital. Doctors enquired about her family. She couldn’t recollect anything except her husband’s name.

“Amar”, she uttered.

Everybody was confused.
Amar had admitted her there the previous night, informing them that he was her college friend.

On being asked, Amar replied that he just knew that she had married Sanjeev, the love of her life.

Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she was referred to Dr.Rishab.

After some days she recognized Amar but couldn’t recall anything else.

After discharge, Amar accepted her responsibility.
On the way home, he recalled their college days.

Thirty-five years back………

After the closing ceremony of the college meet that day, Amar had gone to confess his love before her but overheard Sanjeev proposing her and Krishna replying in affirmation.

Amar quietly exited, without letting her know of his love for her, singing…

Teri galiyon mein naa rakhenge kadam
Aaj ke baad……………
to himself.

Three months back…………

Zindagi kaisi hai paheli haaye
Kabhi ye hansaaye, kabhi ye rulaaye…..

Listening to this song, Amar recalled those happy days spent with her and loneliness without her.

Krishna, why’d you address me as your husband”, he asked.
She didn’t remember saying any such thing.

All he could resonate with were the lines

Kuch paakar khonaa hai
Kuch khokar paanaa hai
Jivan ka matlab to
Aanaa aur jaanaa hai…………

He had lost her and now when she had lost herself, he got her and she too found solace in him.

He couldn’t swallow that a lively girl like her was suffering psychologically.

Ye kyaa hua, kaise hua, kab hua, jo hua…………

The taxi stopped halting his thoughts, outside his house.
Ruchi welcomed them.

During these months Krishna had skipped her medicines many times and suffered fits of rage, but Amar was determined in his decision of not sending her to an old age home or asylum.

Krishna still couldn’t recollect her past but the dazzle in her eyes and mellifluence in her voice was returning.

Naam gum jaaegaa
Chehra ye badal jaaegaa
Meri awaaz hi pehchaan hai
Gar yaad rahe………..

She used to sing in Amar’s presence.

That day……….

“Ruchi, Krishna wants to go out, let’s go for dinner today”, requested Amar.

“Dad, you’ve been with me all through your life. Besides me there was just one person, you longed for. Now that destiny has united you, forget me and be with her,” answered she.

Sitting at the lakeside, a bonfire burning besides, Amar and Krishna were gazing the star-studded sky.
The fragrance of Krishna Kali blooms filled the air with true, eternal love.

The notes

Tu dhaar hai nadiyaa ki
Mae tera kinaara hoon
Tu mera sahaaraa hai
Mae teraa sahaaraa hoon………

were reverberating in the atmosphere

“Krishna, will you accept me as your partner for the rest of our life”, proposed Amar holding her hands.

“I wish……….”she replied, resting her head on his receptive shoulders,  her eyes closed.
Perhaps feeling his perpetual love.

Ik pyaar ka nagma hai
Maujon ki ravaani hai
Zindagi aur kuch bhi nahi
Teri meri kahaani hai…………………….
