What a Triumph!!!

The 95th Academy Awards was a ceremony held by the Academy Awards of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The event honored films released in 2022 and was televised in the US by ABC. It was produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, who was also the director of the event and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

So before we know how India left its marks on this phenomenal event night in 2023, let’s dig into the history of the Academy Awards, which is famously knowns as “Oscars”. The Oscars are awarded for artistic and technical merit for the global film industry.

These are the most prestigious, significant awards in the entertainment industry in the United States, given annually, by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These are the recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements in various categories of global cinema. The winners in different categories are awarded a copy of a golden statuette as a trophy, which is famously and officially called the Academy Award of Merit and nicknamed as the Oscar.

Coming back to the remarkable night of March 12, 2023, when India made history and etched its name on the Oscars, permanently. This year for sure is going to remain special for India for stunning the world on a global platform, like the Oscars, and not winning in just one, but in two different categories. While “Naatu Naatu” from the movie RRR wins the Best Original Song, “The Elephant Whisperers” wins the Best Documentary Short Subject.

Director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga became the first Indian filmmakers to achieve Oscars after their short documentary “The Elephant Whisperers” wins the Academy Award.

The Elephant Whisperers revolves around Bomman and Belli, a couple who lives a simple life in the countryside of Southern India, and their large family which includes, orphaned elephant calves that they help raise in the Theppakadu Elephant Camp within the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in South India. This Netflix documentary is all about the human connection to nature and the coexistence of all living creatures on earth.

As beautifully shown in one of the scenes of the documentary where Bellie instructs a young elephant calf to lie down in front of her and as if telepathically connected, Raghu responds by gently folding into a heap and quietly placing his head in her lap. It is a miraculous moment that illustrates an astonishingly deep and unlikely maternal bond between a young elephant and his human caregiver.

The two women, director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga have made India proud on a global platform. While director Kartiki Gonsalves dedicated her acceptance speech to The Motherland India and showed gratitude to Academy for recognizing their film, highlighting indigenous people and animals, to Netflix for believing in the power of the film, and to several others for helping them make a sacred and brave documentary, producer Gunnet Monga couldn’t get to speak as the orchestra began to play as soon as Kartiki finished her acceptance speech. Monga later tweeted that the award was historic for India and for women. “To all the women watching… The future is audacious and the future is here,” she wrote.

A glorious moment to remember and cherish for a lifetime for all the Indians and high time for the world to know that Women can create a better world and together can create magic, such as “The Elephant Whisperers”.
