Donning tight-fitted faded blue jeans, a fuscia frock style frill top, high boots, a glittery sling bag, and a black and white pillbox hat, the mannequin stared at Roohi from the shop window.

What? What are you looking at? I know I can’t afford such a western outfit today but tomorrow you will be wearing one designed by me. Just wait and watch“, she poked fun at the dummy, kicked on the shop window, and scurried towards her home.

What took you so long, beta? You know your dad doesn’t like you roaming about here and there. Give me the groceries, then go and study in your room”, ordered her mom.

Roohi apologized, handed over the grocery bag to mom, and went to her room.

Eighteen-year-old Roohi, born into a conservative family, faced innumerable obstacles in starting and continuing even her basic education and she dreamt of becoming a fashion designer.

Her father had somehow allowed her to pursue her 10+2, and thereafter, he was adamant about marrying her off.

She never lost hope and cleared her XII Board examinations with flying colors scoring 90% marks, much to the astonishment of her family.

Her father got busy groom-hunting while she prayed for some miracle to happen.

One day, when her dad returned from work, he was pretty tense. She asked him the reason and he told, “My boss’s son has recently completed his jewelry designing course and he was supposed to organize an exhibition of his jewelry. The jewelry is there, models are there but their fashion designer ditched them at the last minute. Every other designer is now asking for a whopping amount. My boss is frustrated and we have to bear the brunt of his anger”

Roohi believed that this was God’s miracle. Mustering all courage, she asked her dad, ” Baba, can I design clothes for the models?”

Flabbergasted, her dad looked at her and laughed, “You? Do you think it’s some kinda joke?”

“Please pa, ta ..m.ke me tomorrow to your office. I just want to look at the jewelry and the models and I can design clothes. Trust me. It’s kind of God’s gift to me”, she requested.

“Take her with you tomorrow. Maybe she could be of some help to them. I have seen that she has excellent color sense and mix-and-match sensibility. Her friends also ask her to accompany them to their tailors”, her mom interrupted.

“This is no middle-class function. This is a high-profile exhibition. It’s not child’s play”, her dad scolded.

“Pa, please. They have nothing to lose if they give me just half an hour”, Roohi argued keeping her fingers crossed.

Her dad gave in to her request and took her to his boss the next day. His boss too was reluctant to give her a chance but she convinced him. They showed her the jewelry and the models.

Everyone was stunned to see the designs she created. The dresses were in perfect coordination with the jewelry and model. They were in awe. She continued to work with other designers and designed stunning outfits.

During the exhibition, not only the jewelry but also the dresses stole the limelight and everyone was asking for the designer.

After the immense success of the show, her dad’s boss gave her a cheque for her work, along with the offer to design dresses for their models in further shows.

She looked at her dad. Her dad nodded with a proud smile. When they returned home, her dad asked, “Have you filled out forms for your graduation and fashion designing course?”

She looked up at the sky, thanked the Almighty, and hugged her dad.

For her now, the sky was the limit.
