Shardiya Navratri 2022 Day 8 :

One of the most important and auspicious days of Navratri and Durga Puja is Maha Ashtami, better known as Ashtami and Durgashtami, falling on the 3rd of October on Monday 2022. The eighth day of the festival is devoted to Goddess Mahagauri.

People follow fast on all nine days. They worship Maa Mahagauri, another form or avatar of Maa Durga during Ashtami, and conduct many ceremonies, entailing Kanjak or Kanya Puja, Sandhi Puja, and Mahasnan. According to the actions of the people, it’s assumed that the Goddess defends or punishes them.

About Maa Mahagauri:

According to Hindu legend, when Maa Shailputri was sixteen-year-old, she was blessed with great beauty and fair skin, because of which she came to be realized as Goddess Mahagauri. Just like Maa Shailputri, she rides a bull and thus is called Vrisharudha. She possesses four hands – where one hand holds a Trishul and the other stays in Abhaya Mudra on the right side, and clasps a Damaru in one left hand, keeping the other in Varada Mudra.

Because of her fair skin, the Maa Mahagauri is constantly referred to with a conch, the moon, and the white flower of Kunda. She is also called Shwetambardhara, as she often dons white outfits. She embodies innocence, harmony, and peace, bestowing religious refinement and donating redemption.

Navratri Day 8 Puja Vidhi and Rituals:

Believers should start the day with Mahasnan to rid themselves of pollutants and wear neat attire. In many temples and homes, Havan is organized. The figure of the Goddess is seated near Kalash. Pan and Supari are offered. Gudhal flowers are also dedicated.

A lamp of ghee is lit in front of the idol. Then, nine small pots are placed to summon nine Shaktis of Maa Durga. Maa Durga Saptashati Path is narrated and the Mantras of Maa Mahagauri are vocalized. Finally, people also fulfill Sandhi Puja on this day.

Supporters also invite nine young girls (before they attain puberty) into their households to accomplish Kanjak or Kanya Puja. These girls are deemed holy representations of Maa Durga. Disciples bind a sacred thread on their wrists, put tilak on their foreheads, then rinse their feet and apply aalta on them. And serve the girls fondly prepared prasad of halwa, puri, and black gram.

Bhog offered on Navratri Day 8:

On Ashtami, devotees bestow an unusual bhog of coconut or coconut sweets to Goddess Mahagauri. It is broadly thought that providing coconuts to the Brahmins on Ashtami fetches wealth and enjoyment.

Significance of 8th Day of Navratri:

Maha Ashtami, the eighth day of Navratri or the third day of Durga Puja, observes Maa Durga’s triumph over the buffalo devil Mahishasura. On this day, people pray to Maa Mahagauri, who is believed to grant her devotees prosperity and achievement, and erase all their sins and pains. Fasting on Ashtami also wields importance as it draws abundance and success.

People also execute Astra Puja during Ashtami, in some portions of India. Several followers assess it as a favorable day to worship their equipment. Besides, the weapons of Maa Durga are honored as badges of female bravery.
