On the third day of Navratri, falling on 28th September this year, the disciples of Goddess Durga will worship Maa Chandraghanta. Each day of this auspicious nine-day celebration is devoted to one form of the Navadurgas (nine incarnations of Goddess Durga). Maa Chandraghanta is the wedded feature of Goddess Parvati. She is also recognized as Chandrakhanda, Chandika, or Rannchandi, and she’s the symbol of bravery and strength.

Who is Maa Chandraghanta?

Hindu mythology says that when Lord Shiva reached King Himavan’s palace to marry Maa Parvati, her mother, Maina Devi, lost consciousness gazing at his unusual avatar. Lord Shiva had a serpent around his neck, his hair was ragged, and his marriage parade or baraatis included strange-looking ghouls and sages. Then, Goddess Parvati took the role of Maa Chandraghanta and appealed to Lord Shiva, who then emerged as a handsome groom. Later on, the two tied the knot.

Mahagauri was perceived as Goddess Chandraghanta when she began sporting a half moon on her forehead. She has ten hands and ascends on a tiger depicting power. Goddess Chandraghanta holds Trishul, Gada, Sword and Kamandal in her left hands (her fifth hand is in Varada Mudra), and holds a lotus flower, arrow, Dhanush, and Japa Mala in her right hands (her fifth hand is in Abhaya Mudra).

In this manner, Maa Chandraghanta is willing to battle with all her weapons. Though the Goddess is felt to be brutal towards devils and foes, she is very sympathetic towards her followers. It is assumed that the tone of the moon bell on her forehead sheds all the spirits away from her devotees. According to myths, while fighting with demons, the sound created by her bell sent thousands of nasty devils to the Yamlok, the home of Yamaraj.
