India’s Impressive Performance at the CWG 2022 on Days 7 & 8

Dear friends, I have showcased the performances of the finest athletes on days 7 and 8, in the ongoing CWG 2022.

CWG 2022 BIRMINGHAM Day 7:

From July 28 to August 8, about 200 Indian athletes will be seen contending for medals across 16 different sports in Birmingham at the Commonwealth Games 2022. 

On the 7th day, Indian athletes have so far won 20 medals, six golds, seven silvers, and seven bronzes. Hence, country wise India is at the 7th rank.

Sanket Sagar was the first Indian to win a medal in Birmingham, winning a silver in the men’s 55kg weightlifting event. 

Mirabai Chanu was the first Indian to bag a gold medal in women’s 49kg weightlifting, at CWG 2022 while Jeremy Lalrinnunga was the first Indian man to clinch the gold in men’s 67kg weightlifting at Birmingham. Achinta Sheuli also won a gold medal in men’s 73kg weightlifting.

In the team events too, the Indian men’s team won the gold medal in Table Tennis. While the women’s team won the gold in the event of Lawn Bowls.

Sudhir became the champion in the Para powerlifting men’s heavyweight category, winning gold in para-sports at the CWG, the first medal for India.

By far the event of Weightlifting has seen the maximum number of medals of ten. Apart from the three golds mentioned above, there are three silver medals from Sanket Sagar, Bindyarani Devi, and Vikas Thakur. And the four bronze medals were won by Gururaja Poojary, Harjinder Kaur, Lovepreet Singh, and Gurdeep Singh.

In the event of Judo, three medals have been won, two silvers and one bronze. Sushila Devi Likmabam and Tulika Maan have bagged silver medals and Vijay Kumar Yadav won a bronze medal in judo.

In Athletics, Tejaswin Shankar won a bronze medal in the men’s high jump event and Murali Sreeshankar won a historic silver medal. He became the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men’s long jump event in CWG history.

The Indian mixed team won the silver medal in the mixed team Badminton event. Saurav Ghosal won the bronze medal in the men’s singles Squash.

CWG 2022 BIRMINGHAM Day 8: 

On Day 8, wrestling action finally began, which added today four more medals to India’s kitty. With three more golds and a silver, India har won a total of 24 medals in CWG 2022, nine gold, eight silver, and seven bronze medals. 

In hockey, the Indian women’s team is set to face Australia in the semifinals in a highly-anticipated match. There is plenty of more action to look forward to in boxing, athletics, badminton, squash, table tennis, lawn bowls, and more.

Boxing: Amit Panghal qualified for the semifinals of the men’s 51kg event with a dominant performance. Jasmine follows suit by defeating the 2018 bronze medallist from New Zealand in a 4-1 ruling. Sagar reaches the men’s +92kg semis and Rohit Tokas reaches the 67kg semis to ascertain India’s seventh medal in boxing. 

Hockey: In men’s Hockey, India beat Wales 4-1 and reached the semifinals as group toppers, to face South Africa tomorrow. England finished second, to face Australia next. In the women’s semifinal match (later tonight) India faces Australia.

Badminton: PV Sindhu, Srikanth Kidambi, and Lakshya Sen reach the round of 16 in individual events with satisfying wins.

In the women’s doubles round of 16, Treesa Jolly / Gayatri Gopichand – Jemimah / Ganesha: Gayatri-Treesa comfortably won the quarterfinals in badminton.

Athletics: Hima Das had won her 200m heat and qualified for the semifinals where she clocked 23.42 seconds to finish 3rd. Jyothi Yarraji, in women’s 100m hurdles heats clocked 13.18 seconds.

In women’s long jump, updates on Ancy Sojan are coming up. Qualifying performance of 6.75m (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) progress to the final. Ancy Sojan started with 6.17m and 6.25m.

Manju Bala qualifies for the women’s hammer throw final, by throwing at the distance of 59.68 m, in the qualifying round to end in the11th position.

The men’s 4x400m relay team is through to the final. The team of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Noah Nirmal Tom, Muhammed Ajmal, and Amoj Jacob ended 2nd in the heat with 3:06.97 and sixth overall.

Table Tennis: Manika Batra began her individual singles title defense with a straight-game win. Men’s doubles pairs of Sanil Shetty-Harmeet Desai and Sharath Kamal-G Sathiyan also advanced, as did Sathiyan-Manika in mixed doubles.

In the women’s singles round of 16, Sreeja Akula chased and won 4-3 over Charlotte Carey to go through to the quarterfinals.

In the men’s doubles round of 16, A Sharath Kamal/G Sathiyan vs Ramhimlian Bawm/Mohutasin Ridoy: The heavyweights from India combine to take on the team from Bangladesh.

In the mixed doubles round of 16, Sharath/Sreeja, the pair of recently crowned national champions, are also through to the quarterfinals. While Manika/Sathiyan, 2018 bronze medallists and among favorites this time, are through to the quarterfinals against the Nigerian pair.

Squash: Top seeds Dipika/Saurav enter the quarterfinals. Abhay/Velavan progressed in doubles. 

Lawn Bowls: Meanwhile, it’s the end of the march for the gold medallists from the women’s four. In women’s pairs, India lost against England 14-18 in the quarters.

In the women’s pairs quarterfinals, India vs England, India’s Saikia and Choubey are leading 5-2 hereafter End 4. A couple of gold medallists in action, here again, taking on hosts.

Para table tennis: It won’t be India vs India in the women’s classes 3-5 event. Sonal Patel loses to Christiana Ikpeoyi in the semifinal on Saturday. Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist Bhavana Patel will take on Ikpeoyi in the final while Sonal Patel will face Sue Bailey in the bronze medal match.

Bhavana Patel had to weaken a strong start from Sue Bailey but won the second game. In the men’s semi, Nasiru Sule leveled the match against Raj Alagar taking the second game 11-8.

Raj Alagar and Bhavana Patel are in control of their respective semifinals. Alagar took the first game 11-7 while Bhavana Patel won her opener 11-6.

Wrestling: Today is the best day for India in this event as three gold and a silver medal were won. Bajrang Punia bagged 7th gold in 65kg men’s wrestling by defeating the Canadian Lanclan McNeil. Deepak Punia also won gold by defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam in men’s freestyle 86kg wrestling.

In the women’s event, Sakshi Malik won her first and India’s 8th gold medal at the CWG 2022. She defeated Canada’s Ana Gardlinez in the women’s freestyle 62kg category. And Anshu Malik claimed a silver medal in women’s 57kg wrestling in CWG 2022.
